Licence to Kill (1989): From Denmark with Love

DANISH CONNECTIONS

Carlsberg's product placement deal with EON, which started with "The Living Daylights" (1987), continued in the subsequent James Bond film, "Licence to Kill" (1989).

The Danish brewing group's characteristic logo appears in more than a dozen shots in the five-minute long sequence which takes place around the fictional pub The Barrelhead Bar. Thai Island Restaurant & Sushi Bar in Key West, Florida, USA provided the exterior for Barrelhead Bar, while the interior was built for the film as a set at Churubusco Studios in Mexico City.

The Carlsberg logo is first seen when James Bond (Timothy Dalton) arrives by boat at the Barrelhead Bar, the shabbiest harbor bar in Bimini in the Bahamas.

“The Living Daylights” (1987): From Denmark with Love

DANISH CONNECTIONS

For "The Living Daylights" (1987), EON Productions set up a product placement deal with the Danish brewery group Carlsberg. A neon sign with the familiar green Carlsberg logo was featured prominently in the sequence where James Bond (Timothy Dalton) meets his contact Saunders (Thomas Wheatley) at the Prater Café in Vienna, only to witness him being killed in a runaway sliding door, rigged by the hitman Necros (Andreas Wiesniewski).

“The Living Daylights” (1987): Carlsberg advance tie-in posters

In the mid-1980s Danish brewery Carlsberg made a product placement deal with EON Productions. Carlsberg, who had previously featured briefly in "Goldfinger" (1964), got their logo prominently displayed in both "The Living Daylights" (1987) and "Licence to Kill" (1989).

Around the time of the theatrical release of "The Living Daylights" Carlsberg produced this advance tie-in poster measuring 28x20 inches for the US market. Some might say that the tagline seems somewhat self-defeating: "He's dangerous and he takes chances. Except when it comes to his beer".

“Goldfinger” (1964): From Denmark with Love

In this blog series James Bond•O•Rama.dk will attempt to cover every connection to Denmark seen on-screen in the James Bond 007 film series. If you spot a detail that we have missed, please fill us in!

● Shortly before Oddjob (Harold Sakata) knocks out James Bond (Sean Connery) with a karate chop, Bond opens the fridge at Hotel Fontainebleau to get a suitably chilled bottle of Dom Perignon '53 for himself and Jill Masterson (Shirley Eaton). The fridge also contains four golden cans of Danish Carlsberg beer as well as a green can placed upside down.
Time code (Blu-ray): 15 minutes 56 seconds.

● As James Bond is saying goodbye to Tilly Masterson (Tania Mallet) at a Swiss gas station, the Danish flag is waving in the wind on the opposite side of the road. Thanks to flag spotter extraordinaire Rikart Købke for noticing this detail.
Time code (Blu-ray): 40 minutes.
